Section V – Genealogy of Lowrey

Generation One

Lydia Lowrey was b. about 1803 in Wills Valley, Tennessee d. 7/10/1862 in Park Hill, Cherokee, Oklahoma.  She was the d/o George Lowrey Jr & Lucy Benge.  She m. Milo Ard Hoyt I on 2/24/1820 in Brainerd Mission, Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee.  He was b. 7/22/1800 in Danbury, Fairfield, Connecticut d. about 1863 near Bowling Green, Clay, Indiana.  He was the s/o Ard Hoyt & Esther Booth.

Notes for Lydia Lowrey:

Per the book “The Brainerd Journal: A Mission to the Cherokees, 1817-1823″: The daughter of Major George Lowrey & Lucy Benge, Lydia Lowrey, age 15, arrived at the school on 4/10/1818, & attended until 10/28/1819.  The “Catalogue” written in 1822, listed her then as living near Brainerd, that she could read & write & “she makes a good wife & a respectable woman”.  In 1820 Lydia married Milo Hoyt, Ard Hoyt’s son.  Later, Lydia wrote one of the first hymns in the new Cherokee syllabary.  Lydia died 7/10/1862; she was “lifting a calf from a well & never recovered”.

Burial Location: Worcester Mission Cemetery, Park Hill, Cherokee, Oklahoma.

George Lowrey Jr was b. about 1770 in Tennessee or Alabama d. 10/20/1852 in Cherokee County, Oklahoma.  He was the s/o George Lowrey Sr & Nannie.  He m. 1) Lucy Benge on Unknown in Unknown.  She was b. about 1776 in Tennessee d. 10/10/1846 in Cherokee County, Oklahoma.  She was the d/o John Benge & Wur-teh Watts.  He m. 2) Annie Fields on Unknown in Unknown.  She was b. about 1792 in Unknown d. Unknown in Unknown.  She was the d/o George Fields & Mary Unknown.

Was reportedly a trader who married the daughter/granddaughter of Cherokee chiefs.

Notes for Nannie:

Per a Cherokee, Rising Fawn was male & Ghi-go-ne-li was female.  Per Emmet Starr in “History of the Cherokee Indians & their legends & folk lore” Ghi-go-ne-li’s parent was Oo-loo-sta.  Per the Cherokee Oo-loo-sta was also a female name.
