OK used to be called IT…short for Indian Territory. Part of my family were Cherokees that came here voluntarily along with the Choctaw about 1828/1829. Eventually the Creek, Seminole and Chickasaw Indian tribes joined us. In 1838/39 we had the forced removal of more Cherokees along the Trail of Tears then formed the Cherokee Districts of Flint, Going Snake, Delaware, Sequoyah, Illinois, Canadian, Saline, & Tahlequah. Eventually we added the Cooweescoowee District.
Vinita came into existence in 1871…seven years after the end of the Civil War. OK wasn’t divided into two territories…IT & OT (Oklahoma Territory) until 5/1890. Then Vinita used to be called Vinita, IT. It was the first or second “town” in the state & is in Craig County. Other towns in Craig County were/are:
1871 Blue Jacket
1887 Big Cabin
1895 White Oak
1898 Centralia (ghost town)
We weren’t made the state of OK until 1907.
